A Boardin' we go! (or went)

Finally!!! After a two year absence from snowboarding, we finally went! We went to Sunshine Village in Banff which coincidentally was where we went the last time. And again,we went with Ken and Michelle, plus Jen this time who was already in Banff with Jeremy (Unfortunately we did not meet up with Karen and Vinh).

When we first got there, there was a huge lineup coming into the parking lot. I guess people wanted to hit the slopes since Calgary and surrounding areas got a dump of snow during the week. After a short wait in line in the car as well to get onto the gondola, we finally fastened on our boots and boards and got going! Some were hesitant the first run down, not sure how well they would do on their turns and stability, but after a few slips and falls, everything was good. Everyone did well and soon got their boards (and themselves!) down the hill.

As for Wacky and I, we had to stop for a bit in the chalet because our toes were frozen. When we started the day, the forecast was about -20 degrees. (well that's what we heard on the radio) It didn't help that we had our boots in the car the whole night and forgot to warm them up prior to putting them on. The chalet was packed with people and we finally found a spot on the stairs and removed our boots to warm our frozen toes. I think we went through all the phases of numb and no feeling, to slight numbness and tingling, to pain, then movement, and finally warmth and feeling back in the toes! Oh, one of the funny moments was when Michelle came in to look for us and she was calling our names as she was walking through the chalet. (the place was noisy and packed) We could see her and when she was about 10 feet from the stairs when she yelled "Norm". (She obviously didn't see us!) Both Wacky and I were looking at her and started laughing! hahaha!

Anyways, by the end of the day, Wacky was tired and sore and ready to finally be done! We all went to The Keg in Banff to soothe our muscles and stomach with some good ol beef! By the time we got back to Calgary, Wacky was sooo tired that she pretty much hit the sack!

All in all a great weekend getaway and looking forward to another trip in the near future...possibly Lake Louise! So if you are interested...

  • I can't believe we totally missed each other. Of course, I didn't think it'd be that busy either. We boarded with Helen & James instead, which was fun.

I'd be interested in going again (but do you realize that Lake Louise has that deadly plateau that 99% of boarders never seem to make across the whole way?)...and maybe this time we should set a time to meet up :)

  • Most def! Meeting "just by chance" doesn't seem to cut it anymore unless you get REALLY lucky! Hmm as for the plateau..I don't think I wanna go there!

  • Hitting the slopes isn't expensive if you have a place to crash in Calgary. Just the cost of your lift ticket and gas - and rentals, if you don't have your own equipment. Easy!

  • J doesn't want to learn how to board b/c his friend Aubrey lapsed into a 6-month coma that almost left him brain-damaged, after a boarding accident back in the days before people wore helmets. After a 6-year hiatus from the hill, I'm also back to square 0 on my boarding skills. Otherwise, we would have loved to join up with everyone; sounds like such a good time!!
